The last 3 weeks since school resumed after winter break have been a whirlwind! Students have been writing a lot!
Reading Our genre study has been poetry. We've learned about the elements of poetry - stanzas, lines, theme, rhyme, meter; about figurative language - onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification, alliteration, idioms, imagery; and about forms of poetry - narrative, lyrical, humorous, free verse, haiku, limerick. We've analyzed many poems, looked through many poetry books, and read poems to one another. Writing Our focus has been on writing expository essays. Recently I sent home a couple of essays your child wrote, so hopefully you have seen how their writing is coming along. I will send home another soon, about an "important rule". In grammar, we've been working on Countdown to Writing, which gives kids many opportunities to practice answering questions about how passages should be revised and edited. This is Staar-stuff, but also will help students with their own writing. We also do a Daily writing TEKS, which students have for homework. Social Studies We are finishing up empresarios and Texas settlement. Next week we hope to start learning about the Texas Revolution! This is an exciting period in our state's history. The 4th grade team is excited that our Badgerdog Writing Camp has been fully funded! This means that all 4th graders will have an opportunity to experience 6 weeks of writing activities, working with authors to learn the craft of writing. Thank you to all who contributed to this wonderful program! I can't wait to see how the kids respond to the lessons and activities. The program will begin the first week in February!
