During Thanksgiving week, students attended Multi Cultural Fest! We visited Taiwan, Morocco, and Ireland. Presenters for each country gave wonderfully explicit accounts of their country. We learned many things about places that many of us hadn't even heard of before. It's amazing how customs of different countries are so similar.
Students are working on an expository writing piece about their favorite day of the week! We are learning to use FEED (facts, explanations, examples, and details) to support our point of view. Students are learning what a topic statement is (a truism, in many cases) and how to use pitchforking to enhance writing. Students have learned the elements of realistic fiction. We are working on our independent reading during class, as well as at home. In social studies, we read about Christopher Columbus and his voyages. His story may not have been the way that history has always depicted it...This coming week we will learn about Spanish explorers, conquistadors, who traveled in Texas. We will discuss the impact they had on the native cultures that were already living in Texas, as well as how Texas developed as a result of their exploration.

What a week it's been! We've been writing up a storm....we are using all our strategies that help make our pieces interesting...
ba-da-bing alliteration, similes, metaphors personification idioms show-not-tell thought shots snap shots explode the moment wondrous words scesis onomaton pitchforking (enumeratio) The most important aspect of writing is being able to effectively communicate. To that end, we really work hard on writing grammatically correct pieces. Specifically, we focus on writing complete sentences, with correct capitalization and punctuation. We are finishing up our study of realistic fiction. Students should be completing their 2nd nine weeks Bingo Reading Cards. They are due Dec. 4. In social studies, students presented their Native American projects; they were awesome. We learned quite a bit about the different tribes that inhabited Texas by the 1500's. Next, we study New World explorers, especially the Spanish conquistadors and the French explorer, Sieur de la Salle. Please remember that Tuesday, Nov. 24, is Multi Cultural Festival day. Your child is encouraged to dress in a cultural outfit that represents your own culture or ancestoral history. We will visit different booths that day and learn about other cultures. You are invited to be present, as well, if your schedule allows. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday enjoying family and friends. See you bright and early Monday, Nov. 30. |
